POUNDBURY’S BRIEF HISTORY
When the then Prince of Wales, now King Charle III set out on his Masterplan to build an extension of Dorchester on Duchy of Cornwall land he established a number of key principles within his vision.
Among them was the use of natural materials, sustainable development and good quality design using traditional styles of architecture in a local vernacular. Certain legal obligations and guidelines are set out within the Design and Community Code for Poundbury. In effect the “rules” you must follow when owning a property there.
Included are details about joinery such as doors, windows, and porches. It remains the case that the use of PVCu or aluminium/composite elements are not permitted. There are a limited number of designs, colours, ironmongery types and sizes that can be used. Save for very limited situations all windows must be made from timber and painted (generally white) and be either sliding sash type or side hung casements. Any replacements must match or be in harmony with the existing and windows must be double-glazed with clear glass.
